Welcome to the Legally Speaking podcast, recording live here from Legal Tech Talk 2025.
01:01
Could you please kindly introduce yourself, name, title and organisation?
01:05
Robert, hello, my name is Matthew Mayes.
01:07
I am co-founder of A-dapt International and we’ve launched a product called TestMyWitness.com.
01:13
There we go.
01:14
And I loved what it was all about.
01:16
That’s why I wanted to get you on the show.
01:17
So in one sentence, what problem are you actually trying to solve in the world of law?
01:22
making witness preparation scalable.
01:24
We put emotional intelligence into deposition training, preparation, familiarisation, all for a fraction of the cost of traditional witness prep.
01:34
I love that.
01:35
And I think it’s so needed as well.
01:37
What’s one assumption about legal tech you think most people still get wrong?
01:43
I would say the big assumption is around humans.
01:47
We, if you right here, right now, there’s legal effect is changing.
01:52
It’s about AI into documentation.
01:54
What about the witnesses?
01:56
The witnesses, you win or lose cases based upon the performance of the witnesses.
02:01
Currently, witness prep is costly.
02:04
In the US, it’s about $10,000 per case.
02:08
So many people are losing the opportunity to come across well and prepare properly to give evidence.
02:14
And that’s what we do.
02:15
Yeah, and I think you’re doing a great job of it.
02:17
Many of you are pitching or you have a session today, do you want to tell people about that or what you’re pitching?
02:21
Yes, we’re thrilled to be pitching today as one of the 30 or so startups at this great event.
02:29
It’s an amazing platform for us to show our very disruptive technology that we’re introducing to the law tech space.
02:37
And somebody who’s come into the sector, working in education, is working in marketing,Learning, learning, I’m just being stood around here.
02:48
I’ve already had like 10 amazing conversations and follow-ups.
02:52
So I just love the energy.
02:54
Yeah, and that’s what it’s all about.
02:55
I always say, come to a conference, bring energy, network, be open minded.
02:58
And look, this year’s theme cuts across a few different themes.
03:01
Law and tech, evolution, revolution, access to justice, purpose driven law, collaboration and smart compliance.
03:07
Which of those speaks loudest to you right now and why?
03:10
I’d say access to justice.
03:12
If we can democratize witness preparation, we can makeconsistent, we can make it scalable, we can help people, particularly if they’re from disadvantaged backgrounds, come across better.
03:22
Obviously, it’s quite different in the UK in terms of how you can prepare witnesses.
03:27
We have a fantastic announcement in that we’re working with the UK’s leading witness familiarisation and we launchedwitness preparation in the US, which is a slightly different market.
03:37
We believe everyone should benefit from being able to come across in the best possible way when they give evidence.
03:44
Yeah, love that.
03:45
And so what’s the biggest surprise so far for you in terms of Legal Tech Talk 2025?
03:50
Well, I think the poet, Jason, sorry, Joshua, has an amazing thing this morning.
03:58
It’s very disruptive.
03:59
It’s not absolutely not what you would expect at this event.
04:03
And it’s so good.
04:04
I love the I love the energy.
04:06
Even just smoking here in the morning.
04:08
There’s a DJ just on the corner playing music to get you in the mood.
04:12
So, you know, I’ve been in like the creative sector, creative events.
04:18
This feels like a creative event.
04:20
Yeah, very much so.
04:21
And I think, you know, Bradley said himself coming from a non-legal background, but with his events background, they put on great events.
04:26
And I think this is very true to what you’re saying there as well.
04:29
Also, you coming from a different background into the legal space.
04:31
Okay, so let’s fast forward to 2030.
04:34
What do you hope will be gone and done better finally within the world of law?
04:38
Well, I’d say witness preparation.
04:40
I think it’s currently, as I said, very expensive.
04:44
96% of cases in the UK, in the US, sorry, go without that.
04:49
It’s an 11 billion market that’s there for going into.
04:55
I think the democratization piece is really, really important.
04:59
As I said, we’re a humanAI format.
05:02
And I think what’s really good to echo London Tech Week, the Prime Minister said, actually, we’re looking for human-centered AI.
05:09
We want AI to benefit people.
05:12
We’re staring down the barrel of the gun with AI taking jobs away, entry-level jobs for people.
05:19
So our view is if we can make human-centered AI accessible and help humans be better humans, because EQ skills are more important than hard skills.
05:28
Yeah, I love that.
05:30
I really wanted to have this conversation today.
05:31
Okay, before I let you go, what’s been your biggest aha moment or standout moment?
05:35
You obviously mentioned the poet earlier.
05:36
Any other standout moments or a big aha moment for you?
05:39
Well, discovering you.
05:40
I was just going to the bathroom, walked past, thought, oh, this looks interesting.
05:47
And just looking at your LinkedIn feeds, I mean, well done.
05:51
I mean, you know, you’ve created this vehicle.
05:53
It’s incredible.
05:55
And forYou know, a start-up like ourselves and new to the sector, we’ve pivoted into the sector.
06:01
Just being able to connect with your network is fantastic.
06:05
And well done.
06:06
I appreciate it.
06:06
No, thank you.
06:07
And you know, we’re very community first.
06:08
We’re trying to build a kinder, more collaborative, future-focused community.
06:12
So we want to have these conversations and spotlight people actually producing interesting, helpful things for the broader, wider public and the world of law.
06:18
So it just leaves me to say, thanks so much for coming on the show.
06:20
