00:55

Welcome to the Legally Speaking podcast, recording live here at Legal Tech Talk in London.

01:01

Could you please introduce yourself, name, title and organisation?

01:05

Hi Robert, thank you so much.

01:06

My name is Aline Von Duering.

01:08

I am an off-counsel at Bonnard Lawson in Dubai and at the same time I am the president of the Skill Board for AIDA, the largest young lawyers network global.

01:20

Young Lawyers Network.

01:21

And we were just talking off air about the amazing work that you’re doing with that.

01:24

Hence, we wanted the conversation today.

01:26

But I guess in one sentence, what’s the problem you’re trying to solve within the world of legal?

01:32

The problem I’m trying to solve with the skill board is the mental health situation, which we know is being talked about a lot.

01:43

We know the legal industry is one of the worst when it comes to mental health, if I may say so.

01:48

Yep, I would agree.

01:50

and the problem that we’re trying to solve is how do we get from knowing what is wrong and what’s not working to how do we get into action how can we actually change the culture and the way things are done because I think there is a lot of awareness by now but we’re still struggling to make that change so we’re trying to empower young lawyers to be that change and we love that and we’re all about empowering and inspiring you know our tagline is inspiringlegal minds, transforming legal futures, and that’s absolutely what you’re working hard to do.

02:24

We’re obviously the largest legal tech conference in Europe.

02:26

What’s one assumption you think people have about legal tech that’s just wrong?

02:31

I don’t know if it’s really an assumption.

02:33

I feel like there’s just a lot of overwhelm.

02:36

Yeah.

02:36

And a lot of in terms of what is out there, what is available, and where do you start?

02:43

Yeah.

02:44

And thenthe lack of knowledge and understanding technology, right?

02:50

When it’s sometimes, and I can speak for myself, right?

02:53

Sometimes I feel like, but I don’t even know how to properly work on a Word document or Excel.

03:00

I mean, I can do subtractions and summarize soft, but, and then that’s it.

03:06

I think in the legal industry, we’re just so behind when it comes to tech, yet there’s the gap is so big.

03:16

I feel that that’s one of the issues that I see.

03:21

I agree I think you know there is and look at a conference like today it’s amazing but potentially you could get overwhelmed so I think it’s important to have mentors, good people around you, be part of communities and have conversations and be open to learning, do all that good stuff.

03:34

Are there any sessions you’re excited about over the coming days and are you speaking yourself or part of any sessions?

03:40

No, just listening in.

03:43

There is many manyI guess because of what I’m into, you know, there’s a lot of mental health sessions because that’s part of the reason why I’m here.

03:52

I think legal tech can be a huge amplifier or improve the situation that we’re in.

03:59

So that’s, that is something.

04:01

And then generally looking at the industry, the sessions on looking at the industry and where exactly is that going?

04:08

Because I feel there’s a lot of curiosity, but also insecurity inwhat exactly is going to happen.

04:16

I don’t think we have all the answers yet, but it’s certainly great to have all the industry meetings coming together and talking about that and taking their brains and listening in.

04:25

Yeah, absolutely.

04:25

And this year there’s six themes that kind of cuts across law, technology, revolution, evolution, access to justice, purpose-driven law, collaboration, and smart compliance.

04:35

Which one of those speaks loudest to you?

04:38

And if so, why?

04:39

I think the collaboration aspect.

04:42

I feel, again, as an industry, we have a tendency of not being very collaborative, and I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes.

04:50

I think maybe sometimes it’s, you know, also almost as you say, like we’re taught not to collaborate too much because we want it.

05:00

really be on the safe side and so I’m really excited about how the collaborative aspect can be improved and amplified.

05:09

Yeah, and we’re here for that.

05:10

And we always say collaboration is domination, meet as many people, connect and grow together, all very important stuff.

05:16

What’s been your biggest surprise of Legal Tech Talk 2025?

05:20

Might be a moment.

05:21

The biggest, I find it very welcoming.

05:24

I find people are, you know, compared to maybe other legal events, it seems a very collaborative space, very welcoming.

05:32

People are happy to see you, happy to talk.

05:35

I love, there’s so much learning and education going on, which I think is great.

05:39

I’m here for that as well.

05:41

Okay, let’s fast forward five years.

05:42

Let’s say it’s 2030.

05:44

What will clients expect from legal services that they don’t get today?

05:48

Maybe transparency.

05:49

Okay.

05:50

I think it’s one of the big, big things and I do hope, you know, that legal tech is really going to help with that.

05:56

I think for clients that is a big thing, be it cost wise, be it process wise, be it, yeah, communication and then that’s what I see will be. Yeah, from a client perspective, I think that’s one of the main things.

06:13

Clear, transparent, and with that you build trust, don’t you?

06:15

And then you build your referrals and you keep all of that, you know, relationship capital that’s so, important.

06:22

Okay, what’s been your biggest aha moment at 2025 Legal Tech Talk?

06:27

biggest aha moment, I would say how many legal tech firms there are emerging, which I think is fantastic because obviously the broader the base and the more there is, the better the top will be and the more we as lawyers can profit from that and organizations and it’s great.

06:47

The enthusiasm.

06:48

Yeah.

06:49

Energy here, isn’t it?

06:50

It’s great.

06:51

Exactly.

06:53

Also to see, I think going back to maybe one of the concerns is security, data security always.

07:02

And I feel like this part has been improving a lot over the last months, few years.

07:12

And I think that was an aha moment for me to see, you know, that space was really improving within the legal tech field.

07:19

And I think, you know, competition is good in a way.

07:21

It helps innovate and improve.

07:22

And you know, like you said, there’s alots of people here, lots of vendors here, lots of opportunities here, but with that it brings out the best of what ultimately people are going to get access to in terms of technology for good.

07:30

We always like to talk about tech for good on the show.

07:33

Okay, before we let you go, where can people find out more about you, the organisations that you’re running?

07:38

Tell our listeners and feel free to shout out any websites or any social media handles.

07:42

Where can people find out more?

07:43

Well, I’m not very loud on LinkedIn yet.

07:47

I’m trying to be.

07:50

So you can certainlyon LinkedIn at our law firm website, Bonnard Lawson, and then certainly for Aija, it’s Aija.org, A-I-J-A dot O-R-G, and you will find about the Agents of Change program.

08:09

for the mental health in the legal industry there, as well as on LinkedIn with the hashtag #AgentsofChange and Aija.

08:16
