Reagan Attle, Chief Marketing Officer here at Clio. You sure are. And
Robert Hanna 1:17
before we get into today’s chat, give us one fun fact that people here may not know about.
Reagan Attle 1:23
Fun fact, I used to play rugby. People are pretty surprised about that one,
Robert Hanna 1:26
really. I used to play a lot of rugby, yeah, way back in the way, we used to win lots of competitions and all sorts. Yeah, that’s awesome. What position were you? Scrum half.
Robert Hanna 1:33
I was number nine. You were number nine. I was number nine. This is gonna be great. This is gonna be great. Okay, before we go down a rabbit hole, let’s talk a little bit about this incredible conference and Clio journey, because it’s been incredible growth yet again, one year on, from where we sat down in Austin to where we are today, here in Boston, and you’ve been a huge part of that growth. So how has the brand actually evolved since you joined, I think back in 2017
Reagan Attle 1:58
2017 Yeah. So this is my ninth Clio con, eight and a half years at Clio. So it’s, I mean, it’s evolved substantially. It’s evolved with the company. And that’s really, I think, the important part of of what you know a brand does, right? You have to, you have to evolve with the company we have. I think when we started, our logo itself has not changed, yeah, but our look and our feel and how we show off, who we are, how we speak to our customers are, you know, just the core of how we solve our customers problems and how that was reflected in our brand has evolved substantially,
Robert Hanna 2:34
yeah, and it’s been so exciting to see, and there’s just real energy attached to Clio every time I come out here, every Clio con i get To, and I’m just really looking forward to even what’s next, because you’ve been touching on, we’re still at the beginning of this AI revolution, and we’re talking about uniting brilliance this year. So what does uniting brilliance mean from a marketing perspective, and how you bring that energy into everything from Clio con to other campaigns? Yeah,
Reagan Attle 2:58
so uniting brilliance was this. I think that it was, it was one of those moments where it felt a bit like fate, because when we I’m so glad you asked me this question, because I don’t, didn’t get to get talk about this. But when we first determined what our theme was last last year, when we launched the registration for the 25 conference, we had talked about uniting brilliance, being all about bringing together an incredible group of legal professionals. We knew things were evolving. We knew that there was going to require brilliant minds, you know, coming together and having conversations and talking about what that meant for the future of law. And frankly, I still, like very much believe that that is the theme of this conference. But the really neat thing is that it also is really about bringing together two companies that we announced today, which is, in my mind, you know, really about uniting brilliant minds, brilliant product, you know, brilliant teams and brilliant customer base. And it’s going to be a really neat evolution. So
Robert Hanna 4:12
it feels seamless the way that Clio has been evolving, and just the energy that’s been given off here and around there. And it’s exciting. I touched on AI before, but AI is transforming absolutely everything we can’t we, you know, outside of legal tech and beyond, but it’s also transforming how brands tell their stories. So, you know, how is Clio using AI to enhance creativity whilst keeping that marketing human and having that human touch?
Reagan Attle 4:36
Yes, thank you. Like you’re right. AI is everywhere, and we’re not like our customers. You know, our marketing team is learning and evolving with it as well, and we’re being challenged, and we’re having to think about new ways or different ways of evolving what we do through AI. And we’ve played around with so many things, but one. Of the things that I was that you would have seen today. It was our opening video. Yes, all done by AI love that obvious, but intentionally obvious. And we, you know, we wanted to play on this, this concept that things were changing and things were evolving. And what a better way to do that than having my team change, evolve and learn something new, and then be able to show that on the on the big screen. So, you know, we we have to be careful, though, you know, we’ve had a very customer focus in our marketing. Thought leadership is really important to us, and that thought leadership is often coming from the brains of the people that we’re surrounded by today, and, you know, and every day. And so I think we think about AI as an accelerator, and it allows us to whether it’s tell those stories, maybe faster getting things to market or to our customers faster. It’s certainly been, been something that’s that’s been a game changer for us in the marketing team, but it always has to be rooted in those like real stories, those human stories, those conversations that we have every day with our customers.
Robert Hanna 6:14
It’s, it’s so true. And I remember a mentor said to me before I said, my company, Rob, look, facts, tell, but stories sell. Get the story out there to people, they’ll buy and they’ll connect to it. And I love the start of that video from Kyo Khan, for folks who weren’t there. It was, it was great, wasn’t it? Was talking about the evolution of of legal practice from like fax machines to paper to moving into the cloud. I thought was so well done. A great example of actually, how you can blend the two that human creativity from the input to the actually, the AI doing the some of the work from the creativity side, for connection. Okay, I want to talk about community. It’s something we’re super proud of and really passionate about here on the show. But what role does community play in Clio’s brand specifically, and how is that community grown globally?
Reagan Attle 6:54
It’s like I’ve printed the questions for you. The community is everything for us. This whole event is, you know, the the once a year big display of the incredible community that we have at Clio. But it is, it’s, it’s a, it’s an, you know, it’s in everything we do, in every way we think, how do we bring our customers together? How do we get to talk to our customers. How do we bring customers together with other customers? So we have different ways that we do, that we have, we have an online community where, you know, our customers can chat about the product, or they can chat about a challenge that they’re having, that maybe be outside of the product, but there’s like minded individuals there. The really neat thing about Clio is that we have so many customers that you can find somebody, whether it’s in your local area or in your that deal with a specific practice area that you do, or a niche challenge that you’re trying to solve, you can generally find somebody that has, you know, has had that that can help you through that. So we do that, like I said, online. We do user conference, little user events throughout the year in different cities. We go to events and we bring together people at, you know, whether it’s little parties or sessions, we try to tell stories through our case studies or through bit videos. So I mean, we’re always looking at ways that, number one, we can connect with our customers, but how they can connect with each other and create that community amongst themselves.
Robert Hanna 8:29
And what I think is so impressive is, given the velocity and speed and scale which Clio has grown, you haven’t lost that client centred piece. And you know, everything you do, everything you touch, feel like you’ve articulated there shows that you’re taking them on the journey with them. They’re not just a number. You genuinely care. And it’s really exciting. I want to double down on Clio con, because I’ve been coming since Nashville, Austin, Boston, every time it gets bigger and bigger and bigger. So how do you ensure that this conference that you put on is an experience that everyone goes away with that warm fuzzy feeling, because I get it every time, from coming to a clear calm, yeah.
Reagan Attle 9:05
I mean, it’s easy to have a warm fuzzy feeling, yeah, when you get to meet really, really cool people, and I think bringing these, this community together, but we do like we want to, we want to create these memorable moments. We want people to leave going, this was really informative. Or I met somebody cool that I learned something off of. Or, you know, that evening event felt really inclusive and very or fun, you know, like whatever makes you excited and makes you feel special. Or we understand that it’s hard to take out 234, days, depending where you’re travelling from, to come and spend time on yourself, to learn and, you know, to meet other people, that’s a commitment, yep. And so yeah, we that word fuzzy feeling is what we want people to leave with, and we’re really deliberate about ensuring that.
Robert Hanna 9:56
And yeah, and you absolutely deliver on that. And one thing you also continue to. Delivering on is your mission because, and I guess from your perspective, how do you ensure that mission Clio has, which is to transform the legal experience for all comes through in every touch point.
Reagan Attle 10:08
It starts in beginning like it’s foundational to how we hire. So every person that joins Clio has really understood what our mission was, and usually is. One of the big reasons why they join Clio is that they want to be part of that mission. And so when it’s like, foundationally there from the start, I think that like translates into the every day. But we talk about it a lot. You know, we have customer stories that, that we have, we have all hands. Customers join us on our all hands, and they talk about how they’re furthering their mission, or how their our missions might be tied together, or how, you know, how they’re supporting each other. So yeah, it’s very much just kind of innately there, because it starts in the beginning, yeah.
Robert Hanna 10:56
And it’s clear from every Clion here, everyone you speak to, like values matter the way the people Clio bring on genuinely, everyone believes in the mission. They see their value, and that shines through. And I think that’s why it’s so special, and why I particularly enjoy coming to clear con as well. Okay, looking forwards, then what most excites you about the future of legal marketing and how Clio continues to lead it?
Reagan Attle 11:16
Yeah, well, I mean, I definitely like to be one of the leaders. But I think it’s, it’s because I don’t know if I should say this, but when I, when I first went to join Clio, I thought, oh, not sure if this the industry that you could be as creative or as you know, you get this customer feeling that we’re talking about through this, this conversation. And it just blew me away. Day one, day one was was really just so special to see how our customers reacted to what we were doing and why we’re doing it, and what we were trying to educate them on, or why we were why we were doing that. I guess what excites me about legal marketing, I don’t know. I think the customers and the industry in general is just very receptive to learning from us, and we’ve taken an approach of thought leadership. I think legal marketing should be rooted in thought leadership. This is an industry full of learners, yep, right. So the more we can help learn, I think the better. Well, that will be received. I think AI is interesting, you know, is obviously going to evolve so much this the pace and tech of technology in this industry is changing, and we’re just there to champion it,
Robert Hanna 12:39
yeah, and I love that you talked about trust. And I remember someone said to me very early on, Rob, if you want to be known, go out and create. If you want to be trusted, educate. And that leans to your point around thought leadership there. And Clio does such a great job. Because every time I come here, I feel far more knowledgeable about what’s going on, trends, the legal Trends report, everything you put on is absolutely brilliant. Reagan, this has been fantastic, as I knew it was always going to be. What’s been a highlight moment thus far for you of Clio Con 2025
Reagan Attle 13:04
Jackson keto was a pretty special one this year. Like when you get to and have to announce that many things that is going to have such a fundamental impact on our customers, I keep saying it. That’s why I’m here. I just light up. So that’s been pretty exciting. And then this conversation with
Robert Hanna 13:21
Europe, of course, it’s all strategically thought out with Clio. I love it, because last year you’re talking about amphire impact, and that’s just built into then uniting brilliance. And it’s really, you know, the flywheel that Jack talked about in his keynote before the other year, about sort of those inputs Clio is doing exactly that. Those energy inputs Keep coming, keep coming. It’s super exciting. So I’m looking forward for what’s next on what you’re getting up to on the marketing side, if people want to learn more about you, or indeed, Clio, where can they go to find out more?
